Magdalene Asia Pacific Virtual Event

-

We are delighted to invite Members to a virtual event on Wednesday 27 April 2022 at 12.00pm GMT / 7.00pm HKT/SGT, in lieu of our usual spring drinks party in Hong Kong as we are sadly unable to visit in person this year.

We hope you will be able to join the Master, Sir Christopher Greenwood, and the Development Director, Corinne Lloyd, in a zoom meeting, where the Master will give Members a College update. They will also be joined by Dr Allègre Hadida, Fellow and Director of Studies at Magdalene College and a tenured University Senior Lecturer in Strategy at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School (CJBS), who will give a short talk on the subject of Forecasting success in the age of data analytics: Do human experts still matter?

In this seminar, Dr Allegre Hadida (Magdalene College and Cambridge Judge Business School) will discuss her ongoing research on the relative importance of human decision-makers and computer algorithms when predicting the success of a new product or service. Advanced data analytics are now customarily used to support decisions across sectors, from healthcare to politics, financial services, sports, and the creative industries. So are machines better than humans at making accurate decisions? Using the music industry as a context, the seminar will address the following questions: a/ when and to what extent can managers sensibly base their decisions on model outputs, b/ when and to what extent should managers complement model outputs with their own judgment, and c/ what type of information should managers rely on when making sales predictions? Our conclusions may surprise you!
