As a College we take pride in being a warm and inclusive community and hope that this website will give you a flavour of what life at Magdalene is like.
We are a small but lively academic institution, committed to excellence in intellectual work, to the care and nurture of all our Members, and to the broad vision of University education as a preparation for an active, rich engagement in society and culture.
Welcome from Sir Christopher Greenwood, Master of Magdalene
I am writing to introduce myself as the new Master of the College (as from 1 October 2020). I was an undergraduate at Magdalene and then a postgraduate. Later, I taught Law as a Fellow of the College for many years. My wife and I were married in the Chapel and the College has always played an important part in our lives. I am therefore delighted, as well as honoured, to be returning as its Master.
My wife and I very much look forward to welcoming you to Magdalene - or welcoming you back, as the case may be. - and we are keen to meet you as soon as possible. I need not tell you that the welcome cannot take the form we had planned before the arrival of COVID. Nevertheless, I am very keen to ensure that we maintain as much of the life of the College as law and safety will permit. Magdalene has always had a very strong sense of community - including our Fellows, staff and students. We are all the heirs of a tradition of scholarship which stretches back almost six hundred years and which has survived war, revolution and past plagues. We can overcome the challenge we now face.
Despite the current circumstances, my colleagues and I are determined to ensure that our students get the best education that Cambridge can offer. While much of our teaching has to be online for the time being, it will still be of the highest quality. We will also do all that we can to ensure that the student experience of life here in Magdalene is as good as it can be, with as much personal contact as the law and a proper sense of responsibility for the health and well-being of everyone will allow.
I wish you all success for the new academic year.
