The Old Library at Magdalene
The Old Library
The Old Library preserves Magdalene’s rare books, manuscripts, and academic heritage.
The Old Library at Magdalene College is home to a remarkable collection of rare books and manuscripts, reflecting centuries of academic heritage. Distinct from the Pepys Library, this historic collection has evolved over time, preserving texts that trace the College’s intellectual and cultural legacy. The Library also curates modern publications related to Magdalene and the University of Cambridge.
Books have been housed in First Court since the College’s earliest days, originally kept in the Prior’s lodgings for novice monks. By the mid-17th century, they were stored in the Chapel roof space before moving to a dedicated library in First Court in 1733. The collection found its current home in 1847, with a reading room added in the 1920s and significant renovations undertaken in the 1960s.
The Old Library’s collection has been shaped by generous bequests from several past Masters, including Thomas Nevile, Barnaby Goche, James Duport, Daniel Waterland, A. C. Benson, and Peter Peckard. Peckard’s extensive collection has strengthened the Library’s holdings, particularly in 17th- and 18th-century theological works.
