The Magdalene Careers Directory
The Magdalene Careers Directory
The Magdalene Careers Directory enables current Magdalene students to connect with alumni for professional advice and career guidance.
Almost 200 alumni are listed in the Directory from a range of careers and sectors, who are willing to provide advice to the next generation of Magdalene Members!
Please see the information below about how you can use the Directory as a current student or how alumni can sign up to take part.
STUDENTS: how to use the Directory
The Magdalene Careers Directory contains profiles of almost 200 Magdalene alumni who are happy to share careers advice with current Magdalene students, both undergraduate and postgraduate. A wide variety of professions and sectors are represented; from law, banking, consultancy, teaching, medicine and engineering, to scientific research, academia, creative industries, technology, sustainable development and much more!
Accessing the Magdalene Careers Directory
To request a copy of the Directory, please email alumni@magd.cam.ac.uk.
Contacting a Member
If you wish to contact anyone listed, please email the Alumni and Development team at alumni@magd.cam.ac.uk with the following information:
- The name of the person you wish to connect with.
- A couple of sentences explaining why you wish to make contact. For instance, are you looking for careers advice relating to a specific profession/job type, CV assistance, interview tips?
The Alumni and Development team will then email the Member to introduce you. You will be copied into this email so that you and the Member can message directly following the introduction.
Guidance for students
Connecting with alumni is a great way to gain career insights, expand your network and discover internship / job opportunities. In order to ensure a positive and rewarding experience when using the Magdalene Careers Directory, please review the following guidelines:
When the Development Office initially connects you with a Member, you will be copied into an introductory email using your CRSid email address. After this point, should you wish to communicate with alumni using another method (i.e. via a phone call or video call) you are welcome to do so and it is completely up to you what details you share. Similarly, if you wish to keep contact to your CRSid email only, that is perfectly acceptable.
If you do arrange to meet alumni in person, be mindful of your own safety by ensuring that you meet in a public place, meet during the daytime and let someone else know where / when you are going.
Alumni volunteer their time to take part in this scheme and we rely upon their good will to enable us to provide this invaluable service to Magdalene students. If alumni do not hear back from students after receiving a request for advice or if students do not show up for planned phone calls/meetings, they may then be disinclined to help other students in the future.
Members have volunteered to take part in this initiative and do not expect anything in return; they are simply happy and willing to give their professional advice to the next generation of Magdalene students! If a Member is asking for a favour or payment, please let us know.
The College is responsible for facilitating the initial introduction between students and alumni. Conversations after this point are at the individual’s discretion, and the Careers Directory service operates under the assumption of good faith from both parties.
You can contact us at alumni@magd.cam.ac.uk or visit us in the Alumni & Development Office, located in Mallory A in the Village (open weekday 9am-5pm). Any concerns will be treated confidentially.
ALUMNI: sign up to be listed in the Directory
Almost 200 Members across various sectors and career stages have already signed up to be listed in the Directory. Alumni can offer insights into a specific industry or share general advice on career choices, job applications, and interview techniques – this support is invaluable to Magdalene students who are about to enter an increasingly competitive job market. Please sign up today if you feel you are able to help!
How it works
- Alumni create a profile by completing an online form (please see below).
- Profiles are stored securely and accessible only to current Magdalene students. Personal contact details (email and phone number) are not displayed on profiles.
- If a student requests to contact you, the Alumni & Development Office will contact you via email and copy the student into the message to e-introduce you.
Guidance for alumni taking part in the Magdalene Careers Directory
We are grateful to Members who choose to support our efforts to help our students/young alumni with their professional development.
The Magdalene Careers Directory is a great way to foster connections within the Magdalene community and allows our Members to volunteer their time to assist the next generation of Magdalene Members to hopefully find their place in the world of work!
We are keen to ensure that both Members and students have a positive and rewarding experience when participating /using the Magdalene Careers Directory and would ask that you please review the following guidelines:
When the Development Office initially connects you with a student, you will be copied into an introductory email using the email address you consented to share when you initially signed up to be in the Directory. After this point, you are welcome to arrange a phone call or video call, or a meeting in person. Any of these options are fine and you should choose the means of communications which both you and the student is comfortable with.
In-person meetings should always take place in a public place and during the daytime. Please do not invite students to your home.
The purpose of the Magdalene Careers Directory is for alumni to provide current students with advice relating to careers, professions and the world of work. Members are not expected to act deal with any issues the student might be experiencing in terms of welfare or mental health, but the College has professional staff to deal with these. Should you have any concerns at all in this regard please do let us know.
