Higher-rate taxpayers will benefit from tax relief by claiming back the difference between the higher rates of tax at 40% or 45% and the basic rate of tax at 20% on the total value of the gross donation.
If you are a UK taxpayer, every £100 you donate through Gift Aid is worth £125 to Magdalene, the difference is paid by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) at no extra cost to you.
Your Gift Aid donations will qualify as long as they’re not more than 4 times what you have paid in tax in that tax year (6 April to 5 April). The tax could have been paid on income or capital gains.
Higher and additional rate taxpayers
If you pay tax at the higher or additional rate you can claim the difference between the rate you pay and the basic rate on your donation, either by filing a self-assessment tax return or by asking HMRC to amend your tax code.
You donate £100 to Magdalene, we will claim Gift Aid to make your donation £125.
- Higher rate taxpayers pay 40% tax so you can personally claim back £25 (£125 x 20%)
- Additional rate taxpayers pay 45% tax so you can personally claim back £31.25 (£125 x 25%)
In both cases, the College will receive £125 as a Gift Aided donation.
Give As You Earn (GAYE) and Payroll Giving
