Meet the student callers - Millie and Chris

With the annual Magdalene Telephone Campaign fast approaching, we would like to introduce you to some of the students who will be taking part and working in the call room.

Millie

Millie NewisSecond-year English student.

What is the best thing about Magdalene?

Its size and location. Because Magdalene's all on one site, it is really easy to bump into people.

What is your favourite place in College?

Either the Fellows' Garden in the spring when the flowers are out, or the Beach because it gets lots of sunlight.

What do you do in your spare time/what is your favourite way to relax?

I really enjoy playing the violin. I play in lots of orchestras: it's a great way to see friends and create something together.

What do you most like about Cambridge in general?

I love how busy Cambridge is. There's always something exciting to get involved in.

What made you choose Magdalene?

I chose Magdalene because it's central but feels more homely than some of the larger colleges in town. It's also really good for English!

Describe Magdalene in three words.

Lively, artistic, caring.

Why did you choose to study your course?

The English tripos really encourages creative and original thinking. It gives you the freedom to pursue whatever you find interesting.

What is your favourite food?

Ginger any day.

What is your favourite book?

Right now, it's James Joyce's 'A Portrait of the Artist'. Don't ask me tomorrow though as I'll probably have changed my mind by then.

Chris

Chris MoltenoMPhil Engineering for Sustainable Development student.

What is the best thing about Magdalene?

I love that it feels quite familyish. I don't have to hang out with people here all the time to maintain a friendship, there's just always the option of leaving wherever I am and finding friendly people should I want to.

What is your favourite place in College?

The MCR. It is really very special, even compared to other MCRs as its size, the leather armchairs and fire make it wonderfully cosy.

What do you do in your spare time/what is your favourite way to relax?

I have started painting while at Cambridge. I am trying to only paint things specific to my time at Cambridge so that I can leave here with some personal keepsakes. Many evenings have started or ended chatting to a friend, while drinking wine and painting in my room. So far my favourite is a painting of the second court from the front of the library.

What do you most like about Cambridge in general?

The people here are amazing. Not only is everyone brilliant but they are also all enthusiastic to make the most of their time and learn whatever they can. Consequently, the conversations I have on a daily basis are consistently thrilling.

What made you choose Magdalene?

It has a strong link with South Africa, is old but also isn't too big.

Describe Magdalene in three words.

Homey, fun and friendly

Why did you choose to study your course?

It will expand on my existing technical knowledge with more contextual understanding so that my professional decisions can be better informed.Furthermore, it'll help me track a career in a field of positive development.

What is your favourite food?

I am more of a quantity over quality person. Consequently, I'm very happy with a massive cooked breakfast or lasagne.

What is your favourite book?

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet. I have loved it for years and actually got to meet him at the Cambridge Union last year. After years of ranting about the books I was speechless when actually meeting their author.
