Law Essay Competition Winner

Julia Prummer (2019)Many congratulations to Julia Prummer (2019) for being announced as the winner of the 2020 United Kingdom Association for European Law (UKAEL) essay competition.

Every two years, the UKAEL runs an essay competition for young legal scholars to win a place at the biannual FIDE Congress. FIDE is one of the most important conferences on EU law, bringing together more than 500 legal practitioners and academics from all over Europe and beyond to exchange ideas and visions on the development of the law.

Julia is a postgraduate student at Magdalene currently completing the LL.M programme with a focus on European law. Having previously gained experience in EU external relations as a legal adviser at the Austrian Foreign Ministry, she is delighted about the opportunity to participate in the XXIX FIDE Congress at the Hague, which has been unfortunately postponed due to Covid-19.

This year’s essay competition focused on one of the most contentious topics of EU legal studies of recent memory – the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union (EU).

Participants were asked to discuss the meaning and effect Brexit has had on the interpretation of Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU), the clause allowing member states to withdraw the EU which was triggered by the UK on 29 March 2017.

Julia’s winning essay, What light has Brexit shed on the meaning and the effect of Article 50 TEU?, is available to read at the link below.

Many congratulations to Julia on her success!
