Nelson Mandela Centenary Event and Dinner
The Master and Fellows invite Members and their guests to a special event, in the presence of Her Excellency the High Commissioner of South Africa to commemorate our Honorary Fellow, Dr Nelson Mandela, who would have been one hundred years old this year. When he came to the College to be admitted to his Fellowship, he spoke movingly and challenging about Education and the key role it would play in the new South Africa. We are taking his lead for the theme for this event.
The programme begins from 4.15pm with an exhibition arranged by the Magdalene College Archivist followed by a discussion panel in the Cripps auditorium on the Legacy of Mandela in Education, looking forwards as well as back. The panel will be chaired by Dr Rowan Williams, Master of Magdalene. Members of the distinguished panel include:
- Ms Nomatemba Tambo, Her Excellency the High Commissioner of South Africa
- Mr John C Simpson CBE (1963), World Affairs Editor, BBC
- Professor Saul Dubow, Smuts Professor of Commonwealth History (University of Cambridge Faculty of History and a Professorial Fellow of Magdalene College)
- Professor Christopher Cramer, Professor of the Political Economy of Development (SOAS)
The discussion panel is open to the public but booking is essential.
