A Celebration of George Mallory.

In a special event to commemorate the life of Magdalene alumnus, the famous mountaineer George Mallory, the College is hosting presentations by three distinguished writers, followed by a discussion and question and answer session.

This event delves into the life of George Mallory, the renowned mountaineer and Magdalene College Member who lost his life on Everest a century ago. Three captivating presentations will shed light on various facets of Mallory's diverse life: his time as a student, his role as husband to Ruth, and his legendary exploits as an explorer.

The talks will be delivered by a distinguished panel of experts:

Christopher Stray, from the University of Swansea and a Visiting Fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge, is known for his extensive work on university history, student life, and education.

Katherine McInnes, also known as Kate Nicholson, author of Behind Everest: Ruth Mallory's Story.

Mick Conefrey, is an award-winning filmmaker renowned for his compelling narratives on Himalayan exploration throughout the 20th century.

The presentations will culminate in a discussion with audience question and answer session, followed by a drinks reception.

Exhibition

This event is a curtain raiser for the upcoming new exhibition George Mallory: Magdalene to the Mountain in the Robert Cripps Gallery 20 June – 28 September 2024. The exhibition will draw on material held in the Magdalene College Archive to reflect on the life and career of George Mallory.
