Promotions for College Fellows

Magdalene is delighted to announce that two College Fellows have received academic promotions from the University of Cambridge.

Dr Brendan Burchell

Dr Brendan Burchell (1990), a Reader in the Social Sciences at the Faculty of Human, Social, and Political Science, Director of Cambridge Undergraduate Quantitative Methods Centre and Magdalene Director of Studies in Human, Social, and Political Sciences, has received a Professorship.

Dr Burchell’s main research interests centre on the effects of labour market conditions on wellbeing. Recent publications have focussed on unemployment, job insecurity, work intensity, part-time work, zero-hours contracts, debt, occupational gender segregation and self-employment. Most of his work concentrates on employment in Europe, but current projects also include an analysis of job quality, the future of work, stress and trauma in police work, youth self-employment in developing countries and the effects of Brexit on migrants and labour markets.

Dr Stephen Eglen

Dr Stephen Eglen (2017), a Reader in Computational Neuroscience at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and College Lecturer in Applied Mathematics has received a Professorship.

Dr Eglen’s research focuses on understanding the development of the nervous system: how do neurons form connections with each other into structured networks? He works primarily on analysing and modelling of neuronal activity and development in the visual system. Recent work has applied these techniques to understanding networks derived from human stem cells and for neurotoxicity testing.

Master of Magdalene, Dr Rowan Williams, said: “I’m very pleased indeed to hear of the promotion of our two colleagues.  Both Brendan and Stephen have contributed enormously to the life of the Magdalene community as well as to their own fields of research and academic leadership, and we all rejoice with them at this well-deserved recognition.”

The College would like to express the warmest congratulations to Dr Burchell and Dr Eglen on their promotions.
