Dr Jeffery Lewins (1985) 1930-2019
It is with great sadness that we inform Members of the passing of Dr Jeffery Lewins (1985), Magdalene Life Fellow, on 23 August following a stroke. His death is a great loss to the College.
The 500th Anniversary of Magdalene College Hall
Magdalene College Hall marks its 500th anniversary in 2019. Built in 1519 under Edward Stafford, it has been a central part of College life, with minimal changes over the last 60 years.
Peter Peckard Prize Winner 2019
The College is pleased to announce the 2019 Peter Peckard Prize winner, Mr Mael Laoufi, an incoming second-year Mathematics undergraduate at Homerton College, Cambridge.
Professor Dupree receives B.A. Stone Award
Congratulations to Professor Paul Dupree on receiving the B.A. Stone Award, the highest honour in plant polysaccharide biochemistry, for his outstanding research on plant cell walls.
Appointment of a Master
Sir Christopher Greenwood, former ICJ judge and Magdalene alumnus, became Master of Magdalene College on 1 October 2020, succeeding Dr Rowan Williams after seven successful years.
Professor Raven elected as a Fellow of the British Academy
Professor James Raven (1990), Senior Research Fellow, has shaped the study of book history through decades of research and by founding the Cambridge Project for the Book Trust at Magdalene.
Mr Michael Keall (1989) 1931-2019
Members will be saddened to hear that Mr Michael Keall (1989), former Junior Bursar (1989–1993) and first Alumni Secretary (1998–2012), passed away on 7 July 2019 at the Arthur Rank Hospice, Cambridge.
Dorothea Richards
Dorothy Pilley, pioneering climber and sharp observer, defied convention with courage and wit. Her legacy is vividly explored by Dan Richards in Climbing Days.
Land’s End to John o’Groats Astride a Charging Bullet
Fred Spaven (2006) built an electric motorbike from a 1961 Royal Enfield and rode it from Land’s End to John o’Groats, filming a documentary about sustainable transport along the way.
Samuel Pepys and Hans Sloane
Hans Sloane lent rare books and scientific instruments to Samuel Pepys, visited him regularly, and later performed the autopsy after Pepys’s death in 1703.
Magdalene wins Gold Green Impact Award
Magdalene has received a Gold Cambridge Green Impact Award, recognising the College’s strong commitment to sustainability through energy, waste, and biodiversity initiatives.
Charles Kingsley
The 12th June 2019 is the 200th anniversary of Charles Kingsley’s birth. To mark the occasion, Dr. Gareth Atkins, Fellow of Queens’ College Cambridge, has written an article for Magdalene College Libraries’ blog.
