University position: Postdoctoral Researcher
Subject: History; Human, Social and Political Sciences
Miss Niamh Bridson Hubbard is Director of Studies in Human, Social and Political Sciences and a College Lecturer at Magdalene.
Miss Niamh Bridson Hubbard’s decision to pursue an academic career developed while studying for her MPhil in Sociology under the supervision of long-time Magdalene fellow Professor Brendan Burchell. With his support and encouragement, she began her PhD in 2021, focusing on how working time reduction, particularly the four-day week, might influence time use and wellbeing from a gendered perspective. During this time, she supervised and lectured on sociological theories and methods, and was appointed Director of Studies for HSPS in 2025.
After completing her PhD, she joined the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London as part of the ESRC-funded EQUALISE centre for health equity over the lifecourse. Her research examines how employment drives health inequalities, employing longitudinal methods to analyse nationally representative datasets.
She maintains close links with Cambridge as a Director of Studies at the College, lecturing, co-ordinating reading groups within the Sociology department, and coaching the university cross-country club.
