Remembrance Sunday 2025: College Act of Remembrance

Members of College and the wider community are invited to attend Magdalene’s Act of Remembrance which will take place in the College Chapel on Remembrance Sunday, 9 November at 6.00 pm.

As an international community, we gather to remember conflicts past and present, mourning all those whose lives have been given and taken away in war, and to pray for peace. The last post will sound and we will keep silence together. Candles will be lit at the College’s First and Second World War Memorials to honour those named there.

At Choral Evensong, after the Act of Remembrance, the Choir sing music by Philip Moore including his setting of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Evening Prayers. Bonhoeffer was a German Lutheran pastor executed for his opposition to the Nazis in 1945.

Our Sermon on peace will be delivered by our visiting preacher, the Reverend Dr Tim Boniface, Chaplain of Girton College, who is also a jazz musician and composer. He continues our Term’s series on the Psalms, and his Sermon, Psalms for Peace, will include live performance with his saxophone from his recent release of a new album Psalter: Themes for Peace. He is also a scholar of Bonhoeffer’s Christology and author of Jesus, Transcendence and Generosity (2018).

For those in College on Armistice Day, 11 November, two minutes’ silence will be kept in the Chapel at 11 am and all are welcome.
