Professor Xavier Moya wins international TERA-Award
Magdalene Fellow, Professor Xavier Moya (2022), has been awarded the prestigious TERA-Award and a prize of $1 million for his pioneering work in climate technology.

Professor Moya is the co-founder of Barocal, a University of Cambridge spin-out company developing a groundbreaking solid-state cooling system based on ‘barocaloric’ materials. The innovation offers a cleaner, more efficient alternative to traditional refrigeration and air conditioning by removing the need for harmful refrigerant gases.
The winning technology, more than a decade in the making, is capable of cutting energy use by up to two-thirds and has wide potential for use in homes, businesses, data centres and industry.
Sir Christopher Greenwood, Master of Magdalene, commented:
“I am delighted that Professor Moya has received this prestigious award for his breakthrough in such an important area. The whole College sends its warmest congratulations.”
The College congratulates Professor Moya and joins the Magdalene community in celebrating his remarkable achievement.
