Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
It is with profound sadness that the College has learned of the death earlier today (8 September 2022) of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
While no brief statement can do justice to the seven decades in which she has served the country as its Head of State, we shall all recall the dedication, dignity and good humour with which she fulfilled the pledge of service that she made more than seventy-five years ago.
In particular, we remember the keen interest which Her Majesty always showed in education and the encouragement which she gave to this University, not least through the approval of two new Regius chairs. A full tribute to Her Majesty’s contribution to the University appears on the University of Cambridge website.
On behalf of the College, I offer our deepest sympathy to His Majesty King Charles III and all the members of the Royal Family.
Long live the King.
Sir Christopher Greenwood
