About the Chapel

The Chapel is a welcoming and peaceful space at the heart of College life, open daily for prayer, reflection, or quiet contemplation.

The Chapel is open each day for those who wish to pray, reflect, or just seek some quiet in a beautiful and peaceful place.

Built in the 1470s, it originally served the Benedictine monks of Magdalene’s early days. Today, the Chapel reflects the College’s rich heritage, with the life of St Mary Magdalene depicted in the East Window and memorials honouring missionaries, church leaders, teachers, and alumni who lost their lives in conflict. The wooden stalls, candlelit surroundings, and brass plates commemorate those who have shaped the College’s history. Visitors are welcome to light candles.

Students can take part in the Chapel community by attending services, reading lessons, leading prayers, serving at Communion, or assisting with Chapel events. There are also regular discussions on faith and belief.

The College Choir sings at services throughout the year. For any enquiries, contact the Dean of Chapel, Reverend Sarah Atkins.

Prayer is at the heart of Chapel life. Daily prayers are offered for the College, and you are welcome to join in using the traditional College prayers that have been shared across generations.

Almighty and Everlasting God, who dost fill all things with thy presence, may thy blessing rest upon this College of St Mary Magdalene, upon the Master, Fellows, Scholars, Staff, and all the members of the same. Prosper their endeavours, promote their studies, and purify their minds even unto the perfect knowledge of thyself; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

O God our King, whose glory is always to be praised of thy saints, and yet is not able to be expressed: thou, O Lord, art in the midst of us sinners, and thy holy name is named upon us; forsake us not, O God, but at the last day vouchsafe to set us among thine holy and elect, O King, blessed for ever.
