Massive steel beams have been installed in the back room of the Ground Floor Left Cloister to support the rear of the building. During the stripping of the building, several intresting discoveries were uncovered. Among them were sections of original reed matting used in the construction of the walls and ceilings. Inside a wall on the second floor of the Right Cloister, an old shoe and a piano key were also found, offering intriguing glimpses into the building’s past.
October 2025
On the second floor of the Left Cloister, the space has been stripped back to reveal the original brickwork. A new opening has been created in the floor to accommodate a lift, which will provide step-free access to the historic Pepys Library, ensuring it can be enjoyed by everyone.
October 2025
The most important room in the entire building, the Pepys Library, has now been carefully stripped back. The removal of the suspended ceiling has revealed the original timber beams, allowing for detailed assessment, conservation and a closer look at the craftsmanship and structure of this remarkable historic space.
October 2025
Initial enabling work on the ground floor, with interiors being carefully stripped back to the structural shell. This process prepares the space for essential repairs and future rebuilding.
September 2025
Protective netting, side panels, and a temporary roof have been fitted to the scaffolding to shield the building from weather and debris during construction. This ensures a secure, controlled environment for the restoration work.
August 2025
Scaffolding has been installed around the Pepys Building to provide protection to the building and safe access for workers ahead of the roof removal. This stage marks the beginning of major restoration work.
