Over the past 30 years, Magdalene’s postgraduate community has expanded significantly, now comprising around 200 students pursuing Master’s and doctoral degrees. These students form a vibrant academic network, enriching College life and contributing to groundbreaking research.

However, financial challenges continue to be a significant concern. Many talented postgraduates face difficulties funding their studies, and for some, financial hardship threatens to derail their research.

Postgraduate funding options are limited and unpredictable. While UK-based Master’s and PhD students may have access to government loans and Research Council grants, these funds rarely cover the full cost of study and often run out before research is completed. External funding is particularly scarce for those studying Arts and Humanities, leaving many students with limited options.

At Magdalene, we believe that no student should have to abandon their studies due to financial constraints. To ensure that the brightest minds can continue their research, the College has established a Postgraduate Hardship Fund. This fund provides vital support for students who encounter financial difficulties, particularly PhD candidates whose funding ends before they can complete their research.

With your support, we can:

• Expand the Postgraduate Hardship Fund to assist more students facing unexpected financial difficulties
• Offer financial assistance to PhD students who need additional time to complete their research
• Strengthen our commitment to ensuring access to postgraduate education, regardless of financial background
