Maintenance Manager

Full time (40 hours per week)
£38,000 - £40,000 per annum

Magdalene is one of the most beautiful colleges in Cambridge. It has the longest river frontage of any Cambridge college and we’re located near the centre of Cambridge without being right in the centre.

The College has a diverse estate with buildings dating from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century, which provides essential accommodation, catering and educational facilities to the College. The estate has many Grade I listed buildings and more recently the New library won RIBA’s Stirling prize, and the college has a critical role in the long term upkeep of the buildings.

We are seeking to appoint a full-time Maintenance Manager to be responsible for the day-to-day running of the department, in particular the delivery of reactive maintenance services and for assisting the Head of Building Services in the planning, preparation and part delivery of the smaller maintenance projects including seasonal planned preventative maintenance. The post-holder should also assist in ensuring staff are aware of and comply with relevant regulatory and safety standards.

You will need to have sound working knowledge of the building trade with a particular specialist trade area, have hands on experience of building projects, proven management experience and excellent organisational and communication skills. You will have knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work regulations and the ability to solve problems.

The position is full-time, 40 hours a week, and attracts a salary between £38,000 - £40,000 p.a. (dependent on experience) and excellent benefits including:

Researcher

Part time and Fixed term
£10.90 per hour

Magdalene is one of the most beautiful colleges in Cambridge. It has the longest river frontage of any Cambridge College and we’re located near the centre of Cambridge without being right in the centre.

The University of Cambridge has begun a project to investigate whether there is evidence of institutional benefit from slavery. A number of Colleges have initiated parallel projects to examine their archival materials, with a Fellow responsible. In 2020, a scoping project under the leadership of the Pepys Librarian and Keeper of the Old Library, Dr M E J Hughes identified some areas for further research.

Magdalene College is now seeking to appoint a temporary part-time researcher (postgraduate/postdoctoral level) to assist in the next stage of this project. The requirement will be for the researcher to work on the project for approximately five hours per week for ten weeks, starting on or around 5 January 2023. It is anticipated that the researcher will complete a total of 50 hours on the project. The exact days and times are to be agreed upon between the successful candidate and the Pepys Librarian.

The researcher will contribute to the production by the Pepys Librarian of a report for consideration by the College Governing Body, to be made available for the Governing Body meeting in the Easter Term 2023.

Applicants should be experienced in undertaking research at a postgraduate or postdoctoral level.

Head of Finance

Full time: 36.25 hours per week
Highly competitive in excess of £50,000 per annum

Magdalene is one of the most beautiful Colleges in Cambridge. It has the longest river frontage of any Cambridge college and we’re located near the centre of Cambridge without being right in the centre.

Magdalene College is seeking to appoint to the role of Head of Finance who will be responsible for the day-to-day finances of the College and leading the College Office (finance team). The post holder will support the Bursars in strategic planning, financial modelling and effective control of the College’s financial activities. The Head of Finance will develop and maintain effective financial systems and processes for financial reporting and compliance.

Applicants should hold a recognised accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) or be part qualified with relevant experience. Applicants should also have significant experience, including team management, with excellent communication, planning and organisation skills. A high standard of computer literacy including Microsoft Excel is also essential.

The position is full-time, 36.25 hours a week, and attracts a highly competitive salary in excess of £50,000 p.a. (dependent on experience) and excellent benefits including:

Housekeeping Team Leader

Part time: 30 hours per week
£11.13 per hour (£17,447 per annum)

The College is seeking a Housekeeping Team Leader to work in all areas of the College.

We are looking for an exceptional individual to join our friendly Housekeeping Team to keep our College sparkling and spotless. The post holder will spend roughly half their time undertaking cleaning but also have responsibilities for checking areas and preparing cleaning kits. Candidates must have previous cleaning experience, be enthusiastic, hard working and have a keen eye for detail. A friendly disposition and courteous manner are also essential for this role, along with the ability to work weekends in busy periods on a rota basis. Supervisory experience would be an advantage.

Previous experience in a College environment would be desirable but is not essential.

The position is part time, 30 hours a week, and attracts a salary of £17,447 p.a. and excellent benefits including:

Chef de Partie

Full time: 40 hours per week
£26,500 per annum

Magdalene College is looking for experienced Chefs to work as a Chef de Partie in our team of catering staff. The Catering Team is responsible for the production of food for students, Fellows, staff and guests and the Chef de Partie’s are responsible for initiating and overseeing the production of all meals during the shift, ensuring a high standard of customer service.

We would like to hear from candidates with previous experience in a Demi or Chef De Partie role, preferably within a formal or fine dining environment who have excellent cooking skills, the ability to multitask and the ability to work under pressure.

This is a full time role working 40 hours a week. The post attracts a salary of £26,500 p.a. and excellent benefits including:

Kitchen Porter

Casual work / Flexible hours
£9.18 to £9.50 per hour (depending on age)

Magdalene College is looking for people to work as Kitchen Porters in our team of catering staff. The Catering Team is responsible for the production of food for students, Fellows, staff and guests and the Kitchen Porter will work closely with the rest of the Team to ensure that food preparation areas are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene. The post holder will work in the main kitchen and at Cripps Court.

We would like to hear from candidates with previous experience in a busy kitchen or food services environment, who have good team-working abilities, a commitment to customer service and are able to work well under pressure.

The position is on a casual basis with flexible hours.

Part or full time: 20 to 40 hours per week
£10.51 per hour (£10,346 - £20,691 per annum)

The College is seeking Housekeeping Assistants to work in all areas of the College. The posts have flexible start times between 7.30 am and 9.30 am. Weekly hours could be 20, 25 or 30 or 40.

We are looking for exceptional individuals to join our friendly Housekeeping Team to keep our College sparkling and spotless. Candidates must have previous cleaning experience, be enthusiastic, hard-working and have a keen eye for detail.
