Conference Services Assistant

Full time 37.5 hours per week
£19,398 p.a.

The College seeks to appoint a Conference Services Assistant to work as part of the Conference Team. The post holder will play an important role within the team, assisting in the smooth day-to-day running of the events and contributing to the delivery of team goals as set by the Conference and Events Manager.

The Conference Office is a significant part of the non-academic side of College; the department successfully manages College and student functions which make up an important part of College life, alongside a wide variety of commercial events.

Candidates should have excellent customer service skills, the ability to communicate clearly, excellent communication skills and the ability to use Microsoft Office programmes (Outlook Email, Word, Excel).

The position is full-time, 37.5 hours a week, and attracts a salary of £19,398 p.a. and excellent benefits including:

Conference Services Assistant Candidate Information Pack


Multi-Skilled Maintenance Operative

Full time: 40 hours per week
£24,800 p.a.

The College seeks to appoint a Multi-Skilled Maintenance Operative to assist the small in-house team of tradespeople (plumber, electrician, carpenter, and painter) in providing day-to-day maintenance services to College buildings.

The post holder will support the Head of Building Services in providing multi-skilled maintenance assistance to all members of the College and to ensure that maintenance and repairs to the College properties are completed to a high standard at all times. The Multi-Skilled Operative is responsible for the upkeep of all the internal and external areas of the College and proactively identifies areas requiring attention and improvement.

Candidates should ideally have an advanced working knowledge of a building trade – electrical, mechanical, carpentry or decoration. You should have experience of general maintenance including minor plumbing and electrical work and knowledge of basic building construction and decorating techniques along with knowledge of safe working practices. Candidates should have should be motivated and have the ability to work productively alone, as well as part of the team

The position is full-time, 40 hours a week, and attracts a salary of up to £24,800 p.a. and excellent benefits including:

Multi-Skilled Maintenance Operative Candidate Information Pack


College Porter

Full time
£23,500 per annum

Magdalene College wishes to appoint a College Porter to assist the Head of Operations in ensuring the provision of effective and efficient reception and support to students, staff, Fellows and visitors. This is a varied role that touches all elements of College life.

The main Porters’ Lodge is based in Magdalene Street and is staffed 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. The Porters’ Lodge operates on a shift system of 4 shifts on followed by 4 shifts off.

The Porters’ Lodge is the reception point for visitors and it is essential that our Porters are polite, helpful and welcoming to all who need assistance. This can include external visitors, students in need of support as well as staff and Fellows. The Porters Lodge is an important part of College life and it is essential that Porters support students during their studies as well as the wider College community. This is a varied role that touches all elements of College life. Applicants must have customer service experience, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate in a courteous, friendly and professional manner. The post holder must also have the ability to remain calm and solve problems in challenging situations and be IT literate.

The position attracts a salary of £23,500 plus excellent benefits including pension scheme, meals on duty, generous annual leave entitlement, cycle to work scheme, and the use of sports facilities and the gym and College punts during the summer.

Senior Chef de Partie

£26,000 per annum

Magdalene College is looking for an experienced Chef to work as a Senior Chef de Partie in our team of catering staff. The Catering Team is responsible for the production of food for students, Fellows, staff and guests and the Chef de Parties are responsible for initiating and overseeing the production of all meals during the shift, ensuring a high standard of customer service.

We would like to hear from candidates with previous experience in a Chef De Partie role, preferably within a formal or fine dining environment who have excellent cooking skills, the ability to multitask and the ability to work under pressure. The post holder will need to be able to work as part of a team in a senior role.

The position is full-time, 40 hours a week, and attracts a salary of up to £26,000 p.a. and excellent benefits including contributory pension scheme, lunch on duty, 33 days holiday (including bank holidays), cycle to work scheme, and the use of sports facilities and the gym and College punts during the summer.

These are casual positions with flexible hours across the week.

Buttery Assistant

Full or part time (up 40 hours per week)
Up to £20,691 per annum (£9.90 p.h.)

The College seeks to appoint a Buttery Assistant to work within the Buttery team serving food and beverages and maintaining the good order of the main food service areas, including the student cafeteria (Ramsay Hall), Formal Hall, and such other events in parts of Magdalene College as may from time to time be required.

The Buttery provides a Food and Beverage service to the College, and is responsible for serving Fellows, Students, Staff and guests at Conferences, Banquets and Weddings as well as daily lunch and dinners. The Buttery team are “front of house” and have a hugely important role in presenting a professional and efficient service to all members of the College community and their guests.

The post holder will provide excellent customer service and be reliable and proactive. Experience of working in a catering or food services environment is desirable but not essential.

The position is up to full-time, 40 hours a week, and attracts a salary of £20,691 per annum (£9.90 per hour), pro rata if part time. The College offers excellent benefits including:

Magdalene College is looking for someone to work as a Housekeeping Services Assistant to assist in maintaining a good standard of cleanliness and order in public rooms and central areas of the College, and to carry out a wide range of supportive duties.

Previous housekeeping experience would be an advantage but not essential. The post holder will need to have good attention to detail, the ability to use initiative and be able to assist with the movement of large and possibly heavy, furniture.

The College is seeking Housekeeping Assistants to work in all areas of the College. The posts have flexible start times between 7.30 am and 9.30 am. Weekly hours could be 20, 25 or 30 or 40.

We are looking for exceptional individuals to join our friendly Housekeeping Team to keep our College sparkling and spotless. Candidates must have previous cleaning experience, be enthusiastic, hard-working and have a keen eye for detail. A friendly disposition and courteous manner are also essential for this role, along with the ability to work weekends during busy periods on a rota basis.

Previous experience in a College environment would be desirable, but is not essential.

The College is seeking Housekeeping Assistants to work in all areas of the College during the summer months when we are busy with conference guests. The posts have flexible start times between 7.30 AM and 9.30 AM and weekly hours can be flexible.

Although some cleaning experience would be an advantage, we are looking for people who are enthusiastic, hard working and have a keen eye for detail. These are casual positions working across the summer with an hourly rate ranging from £9.18 to £9.50. Those working four hours a day will be entitled to a free lunch in College when the kitchens are open.
