Remembering Arthur Sale: Poet and Teacher

Magdalene College is hosting a commemorative event to mark twenty-five years since the death of Arthur Sale (1912-2000), our much-loved Fellow-Commoner in English.

Arthur was an inspirational teacher and a gifted poet whose presence shaped the lives of many in the College community.

The day will include an exhibition, readings of his poetry and prose, and opportunities to reflect on the enduring influence he had on generations of students and colleagues.

Programme

11.00 am: Exhibition on Arthur, curated by Dr Jane Hughes (1987), Pepys Librarian, and Mrs Katy Green, College Archivist. Refreshments

1.00 pm: Lunch in Hall, Sir Christopher Greenwood, Master of Magdalene, will preside at Lunch. Including a toast to Arthur.

2.30 pm: Event in Benson Hall. Mr Robert Rickard (1980), who is writing a PhD on Arthur, will speak about Arthur's poetry. Readings: Former students, friends and family will read their favourite poem, and remember Arthur. Musical interlude.

4.15 pm: End of event

Cost

The cost of lunch is £40 per person, including coffee, wine and soft drinks.

The afternoon event is free of charge, but places need to be reserved.
