Management of Faith Facilities
The Dean of Chapel or Chaplain is responsible in the first instance for ensuring that the use of the Chapel remains within the boundaries established by law, and by the Statutes of the College. No-one may use the Chapel without first gaining the permission of the Dean of Chapel or Chaplain.
The use of the Chapel for events other than services of worship according to the liturgy of the Church of England is, in the first instance, at the discretion of the Dean of Chapel or Chaplain, but is subject to the approval of the Chapel Affairs Committee and the Governing Body of the College in complex or unusual cases. (Written policies are also in place for the use of the Chapel for baptisms and weddings in accordance with the rites of the Church of England.)
In practice this means that a request for the use of the Chapel is initially directed to the Dean of Chapel or Chaplain and, if not straightforward, would then be referred to the Chapel Affairs Committee for consideration. It could then be referred on to the Governing Body if necessary. This means, for example, that issues of concern under the remit of the Prevent legislation would be referred to the Chapel Affairs Committee and then referred or reported to the Governing Body as appropriate. The Dean of Chapel or Chaplain is thus accountable for the use of the Chapel to the Governing Body, through the Chapel Affairs Committee, and the risk of an inappropriate use of the Chapel is minimised.
