Magdalene Members recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2018

The College would like to extend its warmest congratulations to the Magdalene Members honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2018. The Queen’s Birthday Honours List recognises the achievements of a wide range of dedicated people across the United Kingdom.

Dr Rowan Wiliams, Master of Magdalene, said, ‘We are delighted at the recognition given to some of our most distinguished – and well-loved alumni in the Birthday Honours List. I know that all Magdalene Members, past and present, will want to join in celebrating the news and sending congratulations.’

Sir Christopher Greenwood GBE CMG QC (1973)
Honorary Magdalene Fellow, Sir Christopher Greenwood GBE CMG QC, is a former English judge at the International Court of Justice, on which he served from 2009 to 2018. Sir Greenwood was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (GBE) for services to international justice. The GBE is the highest award in the Order of the British Empire, given in recognition for contributions to the arts, science or public service.

Mr Bamber Gascoigne CBE (1955)
Honorary Magdalene Fellow, Mr Bamber Gascoigne, was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE). Mr Gascoigne is an author and television presenter, best known for being the original host on the long-running popular television quiz show University Challenge between 1962 to 1987.

Sir James R Eadie QC (1980)
Sir James R Eadie QC received the honour of Knighthood for his services to the Law and to Government. Mr Eadie is a Barrister and served as the First Treasury Counsel representing the Government in the civil courts on legal issues of national importance.

Mr Monty Don OBE (1976)
Mr Monty Don, was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Mr Monty Don is a horticulturist, writer and broadcaster. He is best known for presenting the BBC television series Gardeners' World.
