Pepysian Celebration Weekend: 17th Century Feast

-
Magdalene College, Cambridge

See how a good dinner and feasting reconciles everybody...

- Samuel Pepys, 9 November 1665

Booking Closed - 2024 marks 300 years since the Pepys Library arrived at Magdalene College. To celebrate this milestone anniversary we are delighted to announce that we will be hosting a special weekend of events for alumni and their guests to attend.

Given Samuel Pepys' love of good food, good wine, and good company, we are thrilled to be able to offer Members the opportunity to attend a 17th Century Feast in Hall on Saturday 14 September. We very much hope many of you will be able to return to College with a guest for this exclusive black tie event.

Prior to drinks there will be a musical recital to welcome the arrival of a wonderful benefaction: the spinet reputedly commissioned by Pepys himself and made in 1668 by the leading instrument maker, Charles Haward. This recital will celebrate some of the music and musical instruments which were important to Samuel Pepys, through performances of settings from the Pepys Library manuscripts and from other contemporary composers. Pepys himself loved small performances of music among friends and the recital will recreate such an event.

In the evening dress up to the nines in black tie to join Members and their guests for a 17th century style feast in Hall. Enjoy drinks under the Pepys Cloisters, a bespoke five-course menu inspired by entries from Pepys' diary, paired wines specially selected from the Fellows' Cellar, along with 'Pepysian' musical entertainment performed from the Gallery. A night not to be missed!
