The Dias Law Lecture and Lunch 2024

-
Magdalene College, Cambridge

Mickey Dias was a much loved Law Fellow (the first that the College elected) from 1955 until his death in 2009, serving as Director of Studies in Law and, from 1988 to 1991, President of the College.

We are delighted to announce that Magdalene has instituted a biennial lecture in his memory, with the inaugural event taking place on Saturday 15 June 2024.

We are honoured that the Inaugural Dias Law Lecture will be given by Mickey’s daughter, Dame Julia Dias DBE (the Hon Mrs Justice Dias). Many years ago Mickey wrote an influential article entitled “Götterdämmerung: Gods of the Law in Decline”. In her lecture, Mrs Justice Dias will revisit some of the themes in that article and consider the extent to which they raise issues which are still relevant today.

Event speaker

Dame Julia Dias DBE

Julia Dias was called to the Bar in 1982 by Inner Temple, spending her early years in law as an Assistante Associée at the Paris Institute of Comparative Law. She joined the London-based chambers 7KBW in 1985 as the first female tenant, working in specialist commercial practice. Julia’s principal areas of practice, in which she has extensive experience, are in arbitration, shipping, insurance and reinsurance and professional negligence, including associated jurisdiction disputes and injunctions.  She is regularly asked to provide expert evidence for use in proceedings abroad, and to give binding and non-binding opinions on particular points.

Julia was called to the Gibraltar Bar in 1994, and took silk in 2008, granting her the title KC (then QC). She was appointed a Deputy High Court Judge in 2018, assigned to the Chancery division, and appointed a High Court judge on 20 March 2023 and assigned to the King's Bench Division by the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales. She received the customary damehood in 2023.
