Miss Niamh Bridson Hubbard

Miss Niamh Bridson Hubbard is a Bye Fellow at Magdalene College

Niamh is one of the two Bye Fellows for the 2023-24 academic year. She is a second year PhD student in the Sociology department, researching the relationship between work and wellbeing.

Niamh began her time at Magdalene studying for her BA in Geography (2016-2019) and remained at the College for her MPhil in Sociology (2019-2020). Her MPhil dissertation, which focused on changes to the UK labour market since the 1980s and their impact on worker health and wellbeing, won the Polity Prize for the best dissertation. Following a year working in the public sector, Niamh returned to Magdalene to begin an ESRC funded PhD examining mental health and wellbeing within the UK labour market. Her research considers how novel working arrangements such as job retention schemes, hybrid work, and the four-day week affect employees’ experiences of work. Outside of her research, Niamh is a keen runner, cyclist and pub quizzer.

 

Research Interests

Niamh is interested in the Sociology of Work, in particular the relationship between work and wellbeing. At present, she is involved in research on:

  • Studying the impact of participation in job-retention schemes during the coronavirus pandemic on mental health.
  • Global pilots of the four-day week.
  • Understanding who hybrid work is best suited for and how it can best be delivered to confer mental health and wellbeing benefits.
