Welcome
As a College we take pride in being a warm and inclusive community and hope that this website will give you a flavour of what life at Magdalene is like.
We are a small but lively academic institution, committed to excellence in intellectual work, to the care and nurture of all our Members, and to the broad vision of University education as a preparation for an active, rich engagement in society and culture.
Welcome from Sir Christopher Greenwood, Master of Magdalene
A very warm welcome all our new students and an equally warm welcome back all those returning from the summer vacation or a junior year abroad.
To our new students, you are joining a community which traces its history back almost 600 years; our predecessor, Buckingham College, was founded in 1428 and parts of First Court date back to that period. Those years have produced many great scholars, some major national and international figures and a number of world-class eccentrics. They created and nourished a tradition of scholarship, of creative, musical and sporting endeavour and a close, friendly and supportive community in which I hope you will feel very much at home.
Although I only became Master in 2020, I have been involved with the College ever since I came here as a student in 1973. My wife and I were married in the College chapel and Magdalene has played a very important part in our lives as I hope it will now do in yours. We very much look forward to meeting you and I trust that you have already received an invitation to drinks in the Lodge during the course of the term.
To those of you who are coming back, Sue and I look forward to seeing you again and to hearing about all you have done since we last met.
Good luck in all your endeavours during the course of the year. Enjoy Cambridge and your College.
Christopher Greenwood
