New Library Wins 2022 RIBA Stirling Prize

The New Library wins RIBA Stirling prize for best new building in the UK!

The College is delighted to be named the winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize and we feel honoured that the New Library has received this recognition. We are most grateful to Níall McLaughlin architects, and to all those who contributed towards this already much-loved library.

The New Library is a testament to the loyalty of the Magdalene community who all share in this award. Fully funded by donations, the New Library would not have been possible without the support from Members and Friends around the world who donated to the Future Foundations Campaign. We are enormously grateful to everyone who enabled the College to realise its vision of building a state-of-the-art award-winning library which will benefit generations of students and researchers for many years to come.

Master of Magdalene, Sir Christopher Greenwood, said:

‘The whole College is delighted that our library has been awarded the Stirling Prize. Many congratulations to Niall McLaughlin and his architectural team, to Professor Tom Spencer and his colleagues on the Cloverleaf Board who managed the project for the College, to Mrs Corinne Lloyd and the Alumni and Development Office and Dr Marcus Waithe and our librarians. The library, which was made possible by the generosity of our benefactors, is a great success with all our students. Standing next to the Pepys Library, which was completed 330 years ago, the New Library has been built to a sustainable design to last at least as long.’
