Dr Alex Thom

Dr Alex Thom is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in the Department of Chemistry.

Alex read Natural Sciences at Trinity Hall, specialising in Chemistry, and continued to a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry in Cambridge, and took up a Junior Research Fellowship at Churchill College, Cambridge. After research positions in UC Berkeley and Imperial College London, he returned to Cambridge to take up a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in the Department of Chemistry and joined Magdalene College. He is a keen cook and amateur oenologist.


Research Interests

  • Development of novel computational techniques in theoretical chemistry to tackle really difficult problems: strong correlation and highly accurate electronic structure prediction.
  • Development and use of reprogrammable hardware for scientific computing.
