Members will be deeply saddened to hear that Mr Michael Keall, 1989, former Junior Bursar (1989 – 1993) and the first Alumni Secretary (1998 – 2012), passed away on Sunday 7 July at the Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge. He had been ill for some time but to our delight was able to come to College until just a few weeks ago, attending his last NRM (Non Resident Members) evening as one of the hosting Fellows on 27 April this year. He kept in touch with countless old Members, and greatly relished his role as Alumni Secretary, taking enormous care with the organisation of many Reunion Dinners and lunches during his tenure. Indeed, it was he who suggested to the Governing Body that the older Members might return to College with a guest for a Reunion Lunch – an arrangement that has been particularly well-received. He took a warm interest in the student body; he knew many of them personally and took a special interest in all the sporting societies, compiling the list of College Blues and Half Blues every year.

In all of the many institutions he served so well, Michael held a unique place in people’s affections. His memory for and eager interest in every individual he met, his wide range of interests, from rugby to choral music, his unobtrusive but profound kindness, his unruffled enthusiasm and good humour, all this and more made him universally loved. He will be sorely missed by all of us here at College, and I know that many of you will also feel his loss.

Master
