Mr Denis Murphy (1937-2026)

It is with deep sadness that the College announces the death of Mr Denis Murphy (1957), Honorary Fellow, Emeritus Fellow and former Senior Bursar of Magdalene College.

Mr Denis Murphy (1957)

Born in 1937 and educated at Downside, Denis came up to Magdalene in 1957. After working at the University as the Assistant Registrary in the Old Schools, he returned to the College as a Fellow in 1977, beginning his long and devoted service that would shape Magdalene for more than a quarter of a century.

As Senior Bursar, Denis served with distinction from 1977 to 2001. His careful stewardship and steady judgement supported the College through a period of significant development and change. Alongside this demanding role, he also served as Steward until 1997, and later as Tutor and Development Director from 1997 to 2003, offering wise counsel and generous support to generations of students and colleagues. Elected an Honorary Fellow in 2005, he remained a much-valued presence in College life and will be remembered for the thoughtful care he brought to every aspect of his work.

Reflecting on his service, the Master, Sir Christopher Greenwood, said: "As Fellow and Senior Bursar of the College for almost a quarter of a century, Denis Murphy was one of the most important influences on the life of the College. Under his leadership, Magdalene built Cripps Court and developed the Quayside. He was also responsible for a significant improvement in the finances of the College. Popular with Fellows, staff and students, he was the quintessential College man. All of us who had the pleasure of working with him will remember him with the greatest affection. Our thoughts are very much with his family at this time."

Beyond Magdalene, Denis was a keen golfer and a great enthusiast for all things Italian, interests he pursued with characteristic warmth and enjoyment. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The College extends its deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

A full obituary, together with details of the funeral arrangements, will follow in due course.
