Magdalene In Amsterdam

-
Amsterdam, Netherlands

We are delighted to invite all Members and their guests to a special weekend event in Amsterdam, commencing on Friday 6th March 2020. Join us for a special dinner to learn more about the College's most famous alumnus, Samuel Pepys and for a tour of the Rijksmuseum with other Magdalene Members. As Secretary to the Admiralty, the Netherlands played an important part in the life of Samuel Pepys and we invite you and your guests to join us for this special occasion, to explore the City and enjoy all that Amsterdam has to offer.

This will be Dr Rowan Williams' last event in Europe before he retires in September 2020. We are also delighted that the President and Pepys Librarian, Dr Jane Hughes, will be attending.

We are most grateful to Mr Jonathan Lowe (1982), for his generosity and time in helping us to organise this event.

Magdalene Dinner in Europe

Friday 6 March 2020, 8pm

The weekend will commence with the biennial Magdalene Dinner in Europe at the Ship Chandlers Warehouse. The Ships Chandlers Warehouse opened its doors in the seventeenth century to serve victuals and beverages to seagoing ships. Captains could order and taste samples downstairs whilst upstairs goods were neatly arranged and brought to the ships by small boats. The building is now a beautiful private dining venue, with a layout which is reminiscent of Magdalene's Formal Hall.

Cost

This ticket price which reflects the uniqueness of the venue includes champagne on arrival at the Ship Chandlers Warehouse, a four-course meal and accompanying wine.

Alumni (and guests): £130.00 (€152.00)
Young Alumni and current students: £70.00 (€82.00)
Alumni who have graduated from Magdalene in the last 3 years (post 2016).

Due to the limited capacity of the venue, spaces will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tour of the Rijksmuseum

Saturday 7 March 2020

Join us on a visit to the Rijksmusuem to see some of the Netherlands' most famed art. The Rijksmuseum opened its doors in The Hague in 1800, with the current site in Amsterdam not opening until 1885. Designed by the famous architect, Pierre Cuypers, the building has a combined Gothic and Renaissance style. Feast your eyes on the works of Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Vermeer and many more, and enjoy a private guided tour of the 'Highlights of the Golden Age'.

Cost

Museum admission and guided tour: £22.00 (€25.00)

Please note that timings are to be confirmed.
