The latest issue of the Magdalene College Magazine, looking back at the 2019-20 academic year, is the first to be published solely in a digital format due to the coronavirus pandemic. To mark its virtual publication we are delighted to invite Members to join Professor James Raven, Senior Research Fellow and Editor of the College Magazine, as he talks to two contributors from this year’s issue.

Speakers

Professor James Raven

Senior Research Fellow

Professor James Raven (1990) is a Senior Research Fellow and Editor of the College Magazine. He is a member of the Faculties of History and English where he teaches British, European and colonial history. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, Fellow of the Linnean Society, and a member of the American Antiquarian Society. Professor Raven was elected to the British Academy in 2019 and in 2020 took up the position of Chair of the educational charity the English-Speaking Union.

Senior Research Fellow

Dr Philippa Steele (2010) is a Senior Research Fellow at Magdalene and a Senior Research Associate in the Faculty of Classics of the University of Cambridge. Dr Steele runs the ERC-funded project Contexts of and Relations between Early Writing Systems (CREWS). She has written on the subject of Bronze Age cuneiform in her College Magazine article ‘Adventures in Ancient Writing and the Cypriot Teardrop’, analysing the ways in which traditions and experiences of writing can themselves inform the way the practice develops, and the way it is regarded in society.

Lorna May Wadsworth

Artist

Lorna May Wadsworth is an artist who has written about her experience of painting Dr Rowan Williams to commemorate his Mastership of Magdalene. Rising to prominence in the contemporary art world before she had even graduated from university, notable works include portraits of the Rt. Hon. David Blunkett, and the late Baroness Margaret Thatcher. For this piece she worked with Rowan over four days in the Master’s Lodge to capture his likeness.
