Chemistry in Biomedical Research

-
Online Webinar
Application Support Programme for BME Students in STEM.

Chemistry in Biomedical Research talk by Magdalene Senior Research Fellow, Professor Franklin Aigbirhio (2020) and Q&A on making a strong application with Admissions Tutor, Dr Sergio Bacallado.

Professor Aigbirhio's talk will discuss the central role that chemistry plays in understanding major diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis, and in developing technologies for earlier detection and for new treatments.

The talk will be followed by a Q&A about making a strong application in science subjects, with Professor Aigbirhio and Dr Sergio Bacallado, Admissions Tutor at Magdalene College Cambridge.

We'll be joined by two current undergraduate students at Cambridge, Ella Henry and Ethan St Catherine.

Speakers

Professor Franklin Aigbirhio

Magdalene Senior Research Fellow

Professor Franklin Aigbirhio is a Senior Research Fellow at Magdalene and holds the position of Professor of Molecular Imaging Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. Professor Aigbirhio previously held positions at the University of Sheffield and Imperial College London, before coming to Cambridge in 1997 as a Senior Research Associate at the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre. With a research focus in the area of biomedical imaging methods, Professor Aigbirhio is particularly interested in the imaging technique of positron emission tomography. His objectives are to design and apply new imaging probes that are specific to human biological markers and are sensitive to in vivo biochemical changes associated with different diseases, such as dementias and cancers. This will thereby enable clinical imaging to be applied to investigate disease mechanisms, their early detection and diagnosis and develop new treatments.

Dr Sergio Bacallado

Fellow and Admissions Tutor

Dr. Sergio Bacallado is University Lecturer in Mathematics at Cambridge and Admissions Tutor at Magdalene College. He holds a BS in Mathematics and Chemistry from MIT, and a PhD in Structural Biology from Stanford University. His research focuses on statistical methodology for the analysis of biological data, with an emphasis on Bayesian methods.

Ella Henry

Third-year Natural Sciences student

My name's Ella and I'm a third-year Natural Sciences student, specialising in Zoology. Inspired by the various field trips in my first two years at Cambridge, I'm interested in marine ecology and animal behaviour. I'm from East London, but my Dad's side of the family originates from Jamaica. When I'm not studying, I love training with the Cambridge University Triathlon Club and recording my radio show, 'On Integrity Podcast'. It aims to bring to light how science has been, and still is, embedded in systemic racism and consider how representation can be improved in the field!

Ethan St Catherine

Second-year Chemical Engineering student

Hi, my name's Ethan and I'm a second-year student at Gonville & Caius College, reading Chemical Engineering! I'm from South Bucks but my family originates from Ireland, Trinidad, and Saint Lucia, so I enjoy getting involved with ACS and other BME communities around the uni.  In my first year, I studied physical Natural Sciences, which included Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Materials Science. During my free time in Cambridge, I compete in rowing and mixed netball for Caius and love spending nights out with friends.
