Online Virtual Event

We are delighted to invite Magdalene Members and friends to join the Master, Dr Rowan Williams, for a virtual panel discussion.

The Master will be joined by Dr Ali Meghji (2011), Fellow of Magdalene and a former undergraduate of the College, along with one of our newest colleagues, Professor Franklin Aigbirhio (2020), Senior Research Fellow of Magdalene, who will be sharing relevant research and reflection in light of the recent events surrounding George Floyd’s tragic death and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Following the discussion, there will be a Q&A during which audience members will be given the opportunity to pose their own questions to the panel.

Speaker Biographies

Dr Rowan Williams

Master of Magdalene

Dr Rowan Williams is the 35th Master of Magdalene College, and Honorary Professor of Contemporary Christian Thought in the University of Cambridge.

Dr Ali Meghji

Fellow and Director of Studies in Human, Social and Political Sciences

Dr Ali Meghji is a Lecturer in Social Inequalities at the Department of Sociology, and Fellow and Director of Studies in Human, Social and Political Sciences here at Magdalene. Dr Meghji studied for his BA, MPhil, and PhD (all in sociology) at the University of Cambridge and went on to be a Research Fellow in Sociology at Sidney Sussex College. He then held a Visiting Fellowship at the Weatherhead Centre, Harvard University, before returning to Cambridge in 2019. Dr Meghji’s predominant research interests lie in critical race theory and decolonial thought. On the one hand, he is interested in the dynamics underlying contemporary racism through the investigation of national racialised social systems, and on the other hand, he is interested in analysing the ongoing presence of coloniality in the world system. Given his research interests, Dr Meghji also has a keen interest in cultural sociology and social theory.

Professor Franklin Aigbirhio

Senior Research Fellow of Magdalene

Professor Franklin Aigbirhio is a Senior Research Fellow at Magdalene and holds the position of Professor of Molecular Imaging Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. Professor Aigbirhio previously held positions at the University of Sheffield and Imperial College London, before coming to Cambridge in 1997 as a Senior Research Associate at the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre. With a research focus in the area of biomedical imaging methods, Professor Aigbirhio is particularly interested in the imaging technique of positron emission tomography. His objectives are to design and apply new imaging probes that are specific to human biological markers and are sensitive to in vivo biochemical changes associated with different diseases, such as dementias and cancers. This will thereby enable clinical imaging to be applied to investigate disease mechanisms, their early detection and diagnosis and develop new treatments.
