A New Library for Magdalene
The historic Pepys Building currently houses the Pepys Library and the College Library. Due to the expanding student cohort, space in the current College Library is at a premium both in terms of student working areas and the book stock that can be housed. We are operating in a competitive field of higher education and Magdalene's future success depends on attracting the brightest and best undergraduates, postgraduate students and Fellows. The facilities we offer must be competitive with other Cambridge Colleges or rival educational institutions.
The College Library remains the focus of the undergraduate students' academic life even in the digital age. Libraries are changing to meet the demands of new technologies and different ways of learning and teaching.
When conducting a student survey in 2015 we found that the current College Library is very well used and over 90% of students want to study in a quiet traditional library space free from distractions.
The New Library's primary role will be to provide Magdalene students with an up-to-date dedicated workspace. State of the art internet access and digital resources will be available, including scanning and copying facilities.
In time the available book stock will be almost doubled and the College will gain 10 more seminar rooms for teaching and group study. By providing a high-quality library building the College underpins its mission to be an international academic institution with fantastic facilities, where students are academically ambitious, hard-working and high achieving.
A significant enhancement to the College estate, our goal is to build a high quality, durable and environmentally sustainable building that will significantly enhance the College's facilities. The new building floor area will offer three times more space than in the current College Library and a new Archive Centre will provide space for the College's collection of archival documents (currently stored in multiple locations across the estate) and will include a workroom for students, researchers, and historic archivists.
A Gallery on the first floor of the new building will enable the College to stage exhibitions and provide a large space for students, Fellows and Members to congregate for special occasions.
‘Phase II’ of the Campaign will involve the restoration and reconfiguration of the ground floor of the Grade I listed Pepys Building. The newly available space will offer great opportunities to the College and the scope of the project will be developed in detail once the build of the new College Library is underway.
The new College Library, together with the refurbished Pepys Building will support our vision to combine an outstanding heritage from the past with an ambitious and forward-looking ethos in support of academic excellence today.
