Dr Antje du Bois-Pedain

College Lecturer and UL in Law

Background

Dr Antje du Bois-Pedain has been teaching in Cambridge since 2001 and joined the College in 2004. She lectures criminal law and medical law in the law faculty and supervises students in criminal law and in jurisprudence.

Antje's main research interests are in the fields of criminal law, transitional justice, legal theory and medical law. She is the author of Transitional Amnesty in South Africa (Cambridge University Press, 2007), a comprehensive study of South Africa's conditional amnesty for politically motivated offenders and the first book on the subject to present independent statistical data on the treatment of amnesty applications by the Amnesty Committee of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa (TRC). Her other publications include Freedom and Responsibility in Reproductive Choice (co-edited with J.R. Spencer; Hart Publishing, 2006) and Justice and Reconciliation in Post-Apartheid South Africa (co-edited with François du Bois; Cambridge University Press, forthcoming).

Antje grew up in Germany and studied law in Marburg and in Hamburg, where she also did her practical legal training. She qualified as a German lawyer in 1997 and took the M.Jur in Oxford in 1998. Before coming to Cambridge, she spent three years as a full-time researcher with a transitional justice project based at the Humboldt-University in Berlin. She was awarded her doctorate "summa cum laude" from the Humboldt-University in 2007.

Antje says: 'I went to my local comprehensive back in Germany and so I know that succeeding in a place like Cambridge is not about what school you went to, but about how gifted you are and about the skills you have acquired. I hope that the brightest pupils from any school or college apply to Cambridge - I'm sure you know whether that description fits you! I can tell you that if you come here you will find Cambridge a wonderfully supporting and stimulating environment - simply the best place to be.'
