Life Fellow, Deputy Praelector
Dr. Jeffery David Lewins was commissioned into the Royal Engineers after Sandhurst. Service in Korea, Germany and Scotland was 'interrupted' by reading Mechanical Science at Cambridge and taking a Nuclear Engineering PhD at MIT. In 1968 he left the Sappers to be the first Warden of Hughes Parry Hall for the University of London, teaching in University College, Queen Elizabeth College and Queen Mary College. He has a second PhD from Cambridge and the London DSc(Eng). His books include IMPORTANCE; THE ADJOINT FUNCTION (1968) and NUCLEAR REACTOR KINETICS AND CONTROL (1978) and he contributed the sections on nuclear power to the MECHANICAL ENGINEERS' HANDBOOK (1992) and the ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF ECOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT (1995). His achievements range from the Gold Medal at Sandhurst to Presidency of the Institution of Nuclear Engineers. Dr Lewins succeeded Dr Roger Morris as Director of Studies in Engineering, handing over to Dr Babinsky and Dr Alboussiere on retirement from the governing body, and Mickey Dias as Praelector in 1987, and combines this as former Kipling Fellow with encouraging Kipling Scholarship in Magdalene and the expanding College computing facilities. He is a Trustee of the ADC and a member of the University's Military Education Committee, and Member of Council of the Kipling Society. He is a Chartered Engineer and Panel Chairman for the Engneering Council's Quality and Audit Committee.
Research Interests
Dr Lewins' field of research is the application and interpretation of mathematical methods to nuclear power problems. The focus is on understanding and exploiting variational and perturbation methods, leading to new optimising techniques. The scope ranges through reactor kinetics and control, in-core fuel cycle optimisation, heat transfer and thermodynamics; stochastic theory, reliability and safety. He was Editor of the annual review series ADVANCES IN NUCLEAR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (Plenum) and is General Editor of the Research Studies Press series of RESEARCH STUDIES IN NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY.
