Eighteenth-Century literature; relations between literature and politics; political education; history of the book; Henry St John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke; Sir William Trumbull; Samuel Johnson. I am currently editing Bolingbroke's Unpublished Letters for Pickering and Chatto, 5 vols. 2011.
