Emeritus Fellow and former University Lecturer in Land Economy
After National Service with the Royal Artillery, His Honour Dr Colin Kolbert went up to St Catharine's with a Hertfordshire Major Scholarship in Classics and read Law with R N Gooderson. He won a Harold Samuel Research Scholarship to work with Professor D R Denman and was awarded his PhD in 1962. From 1964-68 he was a Fellow and Tutor in Jurisprudence at St Peter's College. Oxford and became a Fellow of Magdalene in 1968. He has been variously Tutor (1969-88), Director of Studies in Land Economy and in Law and acting Precentor, and was University Lecturer in Law in the Department of Land Economy (1968-88). Called to the Bar in 1961, he practised from Lamb Building, Temple (the Chambers of Sir David Calcutt QC - with whom he appeared before the European Court of Hurnan Rights). He became a Recorder in 1985 and a Circuit Judge in 1988. From 1993-95 he sat as a Judge of the High Court in the Chancery Division.
Dr Kolbert became an Emeritus Fellow in 1990 and is now an Independent Board Member and Chairman of Tribunals for the Securities and Futures Authority (Nick Durlacher is Chairman of the SFA). He has been Visiting Professor at the Universities of Ife, Lagos and Enugu (1970-80), a member of Cambridge City Council (1970-74) and commanded the Royal Artillery Wing, CUOTC (1970-75). A lifelong (since eight) violinist, he was violin music critic for RECORDS AND RECORDING (1974-79).
Research Interests
He contributed Forestry to HALSBURY S LAWS OF ENGLAND and his Penguin Classic on THE DIGEST OF JUSTINIAN (1979) is now in its fourth edition. He has also published LAND REFORM IN IRELAND (with T O'Brien. 1975) and HISTORY OF SCOTS AND ENGLISH LAND LAW (with N A M Mackay, 1977).
