Dr Hughes

College Librarian, Director of Studies in English

Background

Dr Jane Hughes became the first woman Fellow of Magdalene in 1987 after holding a Research Fellowship at Girton College for three years. She won the University's Le Bas Essay Prize (1983) and the Jebb Studentship (1983-4). In 1986 she obtained her PhD with a dissertation on 14th century satire, and she has continued to work in the field of political and satiric writings, broadening the area of investigation to include post-Conquest material in English, French and Latin. She has written several articles and has recently completed a book on William Langland.

Research Interests

Dr Hughes is interested in literary theory, and her long-term plans include a book on the nature of comedy. She writes: "the central text on which I have been working recently is Langland's "Piers Plowman", a long meandering, encyclopaedic poem which has led me into a variety of fields from the law and the language of diplomatics to theology and philosophy. Having just completed a book about this I am turning my attention to editing a 'courtesy book' from the 12th century. This is a manual designed to educate young men in the manners necessary for life in the political world: "watch what you eat, don't get into litigation and never trust women".
