Mr Mike Finn

Donaldson Bye-Fellow in British Social History

Background

Mike Finn was a History undergraduate at the University of Liverpool where he was a University Scholar in 2000, before graduating with First Class Honours, and moving to Magdalene, in 2001. During his MPhil year at Magdalene (2001-2002) he won the Times Higher Education Supplement writing prize for the Humanities and Social Sciences (the first student to do so) and secured second prize in the Royal Historical Society’s undergraduate dissertation competition. After receiving his MPhil he was a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard University in 2002-2003 and returned to Magdalene to study for a PhD on the social and political history of British higher education since the Second World War.

Research

Mr Finn has research interests across nineteenth and twentieth century British social and cultural history, and has published articles on the social role of the academic and the cultural impact of the First World War. He also reviews for a number of journals, and is organising a conference on the cultural history of heroism in Britain for summer 2005. Mr Finn supervises undergraduates for a number of Part I papers on the History tripos and will be lecturing in Lent term 2005.
