Prof. Howard Chase was an undergraduate (Natural Sciences Tripos), a research student (Biochemistry) and a Bye-Fellow at Magdalene. He was elected to a Fellowship on his appointment to the staff of the Department of Chemical Engineering in 1984 and became Director of Studies in Chemical Engineering. He was Tutor for Graduate Students 1987-94, Tutor 1994-96 and Senior Tutor 1993-96.
Research
His research is focused on Biochemical Engineering, and he writes: "In particular, my research involves a study of the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, with particular reference to some of the latest protein, antibody and gene therapy products. This work is performed in collaboration with a number of leading pharmaceutical companies, and I am also involved in consultancy activities associated with these interests. In addition, I carry out research on the treatment of toxic and hazardous wastes, including the biological degradation of polluted water, and the destruction of used tyres and plastics by microwave-induced pyrolysis. This obviously takes my research into areas with environmental implications, and therefore I take a broader interest in related matters."
