Professor Boyle

Background

Prof. Nick Boyle came up as a Scholar to read French and German in 1964, becoming a Research Fellow in 1968 and an Official Fellow in 1972. In 1974 he joined the University's Department of German, becoming a Reader in 1993 and a Professor in 2000. His time in Cambridge has been punctuated by shorter and longer periods of research in Germany, especially Gšttingen. Most recently, he spent the year 1994-5 at the Institute of Advanced Study in Berlin.

Research Interests

Prof. Boyle teaches and researches in German language, literature, history and thought, with particular reference to the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. He is the author of a best-selling biography of Goethe and of books of literary and theological essays. He retains an interest in French 16th and 17th century literature and (in his words) "an amateur's interest in the contribution which theology, philosophy and history can make to an understanding of the contemporary international. political and social (dis)order, with special reference to the European Union".
