Director of Studies in Engineering and Professor of Aerodynamics
Prof Holger Babinsky was born and grew up in a small Bavarian village near the Alps and the Austrian border. In 1984 he moved to the University of Stuttgart to read Aerospace Engineering. In 1990 he first came to England to undertake a research project at the College of Aeronautics at Cranfield Institute of Technology where he continued his stay as a Research Assistant working on his doctorate in hypersonic flow (awarded in 1994). From Cranfield he moved to Sendai in Northern Japan to work as Research Associate at the Institute of Fluid Sciences of Tohoku University. After 18 months he returned to England to take up the post of University Lecturer in Aerodynamics in the Engineering Department. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2000 and gained a Readership in 2002. He was made Professor of Aerodynamics 2010
Research
Prof Babinsky's research covers the whole range of aerodynamics from power kites and Formula 1 cars to the understanding of supersonic flows. A focus of his work is the study of transonic and supersonic flow phenomena, such as wing flows and helicopter blade flows. In the Department of Engineering, Prof Babinsky is responsible for the aero-lab, which features an extensive range of wind tunnel facilities.
