A. C. Benson Centenary Lecture

'"A headlong pen" – Arthur Christopher Benson, diarist'

We are delighted to invite you to the A. C. Benson Centenary Lecture, titled '"A headlong pen" – Arthur Christopher Benson, diarist', which will be delivered by Professor Eamon Duffy, FBA, Emeritus Professor of the History of Christianity at the University of Cambridge.

The lecture will take place at 5.15pm on Wednesday 12 March 2025, in the Cripps Court Auditorium at Magdalene College. Following the lecture, guests are warmly invited to a wine reception.

This special event marks the centenary of Arthur Christopher Benson, esteemed essayist, poet, and 28th Master of Magdalene College (1915–1925), who profoundly shaped the College through his leadership and generosity. Best known for penning Land of Hope and Glory, Benson was also a prolific diarist, leaving behind 30 years of detailed journals that provide a sharp and candid view of his life and times. Professor Duffy, an eminent historian, will explore the significance of these writings and their lasting impact.

The event is free to attend, and all are welcome.

For those unable to join in person, the lecture will be live-streamed at: www.magd.online/livestream
