e-Luminate Cambridge is a light festival that has been running in the city since 2013. The contemporary arts festival consists of installations, activities, talks and concerts, many of which come to life after dusk.
From Friday 10 February until Wednesday 15 residents and visitors will discover Cambridge’s iconic buildings and public spaces in a new light.
For the first time Magdalene is involved with the festival, an installation titled ‘On the wings of freedom’ has been set up in River Court across from the Cambridge Quayside.
The installation consists of flying butterflies made from polypropylene plastic encasing interactive LED lights. When the sun goes down the butterflies put on a spectacular light show based on audience interaction and participation. By logging into the installation WiFi network festival goers can change the behaviour of the lights via their mobile phone, this allows audience members to become the artist, creating geometric shapes, waves of colour or vibrant rainbows.
The combined use of art, light and digital technology produces an experience for all ages to enjoy, and that’s just the start, there is an interactive spotlight installation on Quayside along with the projections and illuminations across the city to explore and enjoy!
