Archive Donations
Magdalene College welcomes donations of books, manuscripts, and archival material that contribute to the richness of its collections. Over the years, generous donations have helped preserve the history of the College and support academic research.
How to donate
If you are considering donating materials to the College Archives or Libraries, please contact us in advance to discuss your items. A list of items (including author, title, publisher, and date) or, in the case of manuscripts and archival material, a detailed description of the content and volume, will help us assess suitability.
Criteria for accepting donations
Donations are carefully considered based on historical significance, relevance, and space availability. Materials must align with the following criteria:
- Archives: Documents, photographs, and personal papers related to College Members and activities. Some small objects may be accepted if they enhance the collection.
- Old Library: Books published before 1800 of historical value, specialist works published after 1800, or fine first editions.
- Pepys Scholars’ Library: Items related to Samuel Pepys, his library, or his era.
- College Library: Books supporting undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Donation Conditions
- Donations become the property of Magdalene College.
- The College determines cataloguing, access, and retention.
- Donors cover transport costs and any customs duties for international donations.
- Future visits to view donated items must be arranged in advance.
- For unpublished manuscripts and correspondence, copyright must be transferred to the College.
We are grateful for all offers of donations and appreciate your support in preserving the heritage of Magdalene College. To discuss a potential donation, please contact the College Archives or Libraries.
