Magdalene considers applications for all undergraduate courses on offer at Cambridge. We strongly recommend you examine the University web-pages if you require specific details of all undergraduate courses.
Our students attend the same lab classes and lectures as students from other Colleges and are assessed through the same University exams. However Magdalene has much to offer the individual.
Each undergraduate is assigned a Director of Studies (DoS) who is typically a Fellow of the College who is experienced in the structure and intricacies of a specific course. The DoS meets with his or her students on a regular basis to discuss progress and will often take part in College teaching through Supervisions. In addition the DoS will often meet with students in a more informal environment to discuss topics of current interest e.g. through the Parlour Talks (below) or just socially through subject-based dinners.
All students are expected to attend University-organised lectures, seminars, labs etc as instructed by their Director of Studies. These typically provide the syllabus for the end-of-year assessment - the University examinations which are typically held in May or early June. In addition Directors of Studies will organise supervisions and/or seminars/discussion groups in order to help students develop appropriate knowledge and skills. A supervision is a small group teaching exercise in which 2-3 students typically meet with a senior academic (often a College Fellow or other recommended academic or senior researcher) on a regular basis e.g. once per week. These meetings are intended to test depth of knowledge and understanding through discussion and questioning. Supervisors will often set work which forms the basis for discussion in the supervision. This work might include problem-solving activities for Mathematicians, Engineers or Physical scientists or essays for Arts students.
The College offers excellent study facilities to help our students achieve their full potential. The main library housed in the beautiful Pepys building provides all the recommended texts for first and second year undergraduate courses along with computing facilities to track down other resources in the University Library or Departmental libraries. The College library itself is typically open 24h/day and the University library is just a few minutes bicycle ride away.
All student rooms are equipped with broad band internet access and a wide range of journals are available on-line. For those who do not have their own computer, the College Computer room offers both PC and Mac terminals with internet access, a colour printer, scanner etc. for printing essays, preparing reports or undertaking data analysis.
In recent years our under-graduates have been honoured with University prizes for academic excellence in both Arts and Science subjects. The College additionally awards Scholarships (in recognition of academic excellence) and Exhibitions (for strong end-of-year performances close to a first class mark).
The Parlour talks are organised by the MCR and provide a focus for the entire College membership (JCR and MCR members as well as College Fellows) to debate and discuss academic issues in an informal atmosphere. The College’s Law Fellows also support a strong debating team who take part in intercollegiate competitions. In addition, the College has organised topic-specific programmes in recent years which have offered the opportunity to broaden discussion beyond the normal confines of the academic syllabus. Our acclaimed Lit-fest attracted international speakers and covered a wide range of topics from Arts to Science.
