All Cambridge students attend the same lectures and lab classes and sit the same exams irrespective of College. Yet each College offers its own distinct character. It is always difficult to explain ‘that feeling’ to someone else, but there is a somewhat unerring reaction of ‘yes, this is the right place’ for many who visit Magdalene. Perhaps its a wander through the formality of First and Second courts with the grandeur of the Pepys library and the intimacy of the College Hall or Chapel; maybe the tranquillity of the Fellows Garden; the informality of “the Village” - a collection of buildings of various periods and architectural styles across the road from First Court; or perhaps the College’s most recent show-piece, the spectacular Cripps’ Court; a blend of the old with the new in that inimitable style which reflects the Magdalene traditions. However, it is not just the buildings but also the people who make Magdalene a living, vibrant community. With around 105 new undergraduates every year, Magdalene is one of the smaller Cambridge Colleges and is renowned for its warm and friendly atmosphere across the University. We are our own best advocates and, for those who manage to visit the College on an Open Day, it is the enthusiasm which our current students express which speaks volumes.
