The cost of studying in Cambridge is no more expensive than studying at many other Universities in the UK. Indeed there is a wide range of Bursaries, Awards and Scholarships that can support Home, EU and Overseas students during their studies here. These pages outline the costs associated with studying in Cambridge and the financial support which is available to help you meet those costs. This is not intended to be comprehensive and you should also consult The University website which has an excellent summary of the financial costs of studying at Cambridge.
Your costs at Cambridge can be conveniently broken into two components:
The exact amount you have to pay depends on whether you are classified as a Home, Islands, EU or Overseas student for Fees purposes. In most cases your Fees classification is straight forward, but occasionally personal circumstances can be more complex, e.g. UK or EU students living outside the UK/EU, or overseas students resident in the UK/EU. If you apply to us and your fee status is uncertain we will ask you for additional information about your personal circumstances which will assist us in making our assessment.
Details of financial support (to cover your fees and living costs) including government bursaries, grants and loans which may be available to UK and EU- domiciled students can be found on the British Government's Directgov website - see http://www.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/finance/ for access to the part of that website, relevant to the country of the UK or Europe you live in.
The main University admissions website http://www.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/finance/support.html additionally lists many other forms of financial aid you may be eligible to apply for once you have matriculated as a student in Cambridge.
International students (from outside the EU) should instead visit http://www.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/international/finance.html
These are split into the Tuition Fee and the College Fee.
The amount paid in terms of Tuition Fees depends upon the course being studied and your Fee Status (Home/EU/Islands/Overseas).
For UK and European students the tuition fee at the University of Cambridge for 2009–10 is £3,225 per year for all courses, as outlined in our Access Agreement, which has been approved by the Office for Fair Access (OFFA). A small inflationary rise determined by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) will be applied to the fee for 2010–11.
No UK or European student has to pay their tuition fees while they are studying at university. You can choose to do so if you wish, but you can also take out a student loan for fees, and defer payment until you have graduated. The student loan for fees is paid back in instalments once you have left university and are earning a minimum salary determined by the DIUS (currently £15,000 per year).
Unlike overseas-fee-status students (and students from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man), UK or EU students who have been judged eligible for public support do not have to pay an additional College fee, unless they are studying for a second degree.
Overseas students are liable for Tuition Fees, College Fees as well as making provision for their living costs. Representative fees for the academic year 2009/10 can be accessed http://www.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/international/finance.html This site also lists various forms of financial support and scholarships which non-EU nationals can apply for.
